Your company name:
L-word.com and theLlife.com
When did you start your business?
December 2003
Do you target the lesbian market?
Exclusively.
If so, why did you decide to target this specific market?
We started as a fan site for The L Word. It was only natural to be exclusively lesbian/bi.
What has been your biggest challenge in creating a lesbian business?
Lesbians are very reluctant to visit and buy from our advertisers. They don't seem to understand that web sites a) cost money and b) are paid for either by subscriptions or advertiser support. If you're visiting a web site and like it, support the advertisers!
What do you like the most about your business?
Working with lesbians and lesbian content all day long.
Tell us about your company.
We began as support for the L word. In developing the site, we wrote the best fan fiction software available anywhere online. We now use that software for theLlife.com in both our fan fiction section and our creative writing archive. Next, we're opening general fan fiction sites, powered by our fan fiction software. We'll start with tv in general, moving to movie fan fiction and fan fiction based on books after that.
If you had one advice to give to other lesbians wanting to start a business, what would it be?
Have a detailed plan. If you can flesh out the details and believe in the project, go for it. NETWORK! One of the best things about the lesbian community is the power of networking. Reach out to others for advice and help. And don't forget to *offer* advice and help to others.
